INDIGO

My fascination with Indigo keeps filtering through my artwork, no matter what the media is. These two examples of 30” x 30” mixed media with encaustic are abstractions of the large pieces of fabric that I stitched folded and dyed for my previous projects.

There is something extraordinary about how the process connects me to Japan, to my visit, to my learning there and the depth of its meaning in my life.

“Sculpture and Light”

I had some old wire structures and a box of fabric scraps. Textiles and apparel have a huge environmental impact and our industry’s current model is unsustainable. We are making more and more stuff. Upcycling and re-purposing clothing has peeked my interest. In this case I thought I would use my scraps of fabric to build texture. Fabric builds layers in a different form than paper. It’s softer yet strong. Using white allows the light to filter through the pieces. It’s luminosity inviting, yet leftovers and decay evoke nostalgia. I love the narrative and the story captured between the layers.

I will soon take these conical forms, secured them and stacked them into a vertical sculpture.
